Abela is a charitable organisation that focuses on Education and Entrepreneurial Development of the underprivileged in South Africa.

Our mission is to support talented and dedicated individuals by providing them with the financial assistance needed to pursue their education. We exist For Those Becoming, and our goal is to empower young people to become unstoppable. We are honoured to be a part of their journeys and to help them achieve their dreams of a brighter future.

Our funding is uniquely generated through a strategic shareholding in Empowerment Capital Investment Partners. This structure provides a stable, long-term financial foundation, allowing us to make multi-year commitments to our scholars, ensuring they have consistent support from high school through their tertiary education.

This financial independence allows us to dedicate 100% of our energy to what truly matters: identifying deserving students, nurturing our strategic partnerships, and delivering the holistic support that empowers young people to thrive. Our model creates a virtuous cycle where commercial success directly fuels social transformation. It is the engine that drives our mission to help talented individuals rewrite their stories, break generational barriers, and build brighter futures for themselves and their communities.



Objectives

The objects of the Trust shall be benefit Black people by: providing financial assistance for further education and skills development, in the form of scholarship, bursaries and/ or cash awards; and or providing financial assistance in the form of cash awards to charities and/or the Community Beneficiary. Development of communities of poor and needy persons and anti poverty initiative including: to promotion of community- based project relating to self- help, empowerment, capacity building, skills development or anti-poverty. The provision of training, support or assistance to community based projects. The provision of training, support or assistance to emerging micro enterprises to improve capacity to start and manage business, which may include the granting of loans on such conditions as may be proscribed by the Minister of Finance by way of regulation: provision of poverty relief.

Meet Our Trustees

Humphrey Mathe - Independent Chairman

Dr. Humphrey is an independent chairman of the Abela Trust and Empowerment Capital Investment Partners, and the CEO of Tranter Resources (Pty) Limited.

Humphrey is a director of Howden Africa, Handa Copper Corporation (TSX), Wescoal Holdings and Council for Geoscience among others. He was previously CEO of Scinta South Africa and prior to that the Executive General Manager of Corporate Services at Exxaro Resources Limited and Chief Operations Officer and Executive Director of Eyesizwe Coal. He is a Fellow of the Geological Society of South Africa and a qualified geologist with an MSc in mineral exploration and holds a PhD.

Nthabiseng Lempe - Independent Trustee

Nthabiseng Lempe began her career in the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) sector in 2011.

She worked as a B-BBEE analyst and ownership specialist at National Empowerment Rating Agency (NERA). Her role involved conducting verifications for clients across various sectors and assessing complex ownership structures. Her audit background and understanding of audit procedures and methodology adds value to all her client engagements.

She has extensive experience and a multi-faceted approach to B-BBEE advisory and implementation across various B-BBEE Sector Charters. Nthabiseng specializes in providing strategic direction and operational support in terms of B-BBEE implementation. She manages ownership compliance by offering governance support as a trustee in an era and industry where good governance is longer a nice to have.

Nthabiseng holds a National Diploma in Business Management from the University of Johannesburg and is currently pursuing a qualification as a Governance Practitioner with the Chartered Governance Institute of Southern Africa (CGISA).

Tshepiso Sethole - Independent Trustee

Tshepiso is a dedicated and competent professional who holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) Degree coupled with a part CIS Professional Advanced Qualification and is currently undergoing training on the JSE Listings Requirements.

Her passion for governance and Company Secretariat work has encouraged her to expand her knowledge into Compliance Management and is looking to attain a post-graduate qualification in relation thereto.

In her 11 years of experience, she has worked in multiple countries and organisations with the most significant roles being in Retail FMCG, Health Non-Profit Organisations and Asset Management and the Banking industry. She has also held some Trustee roles and served on a board of an investment entity.

Tshepiso has worked closely with the Financial Services Conduct Authority, Prudential Authority and more recently the Guernsey Financial Services Commission. Her knowledge on legislation includes, but is not limited to the South African Companies Act, King IV Code of Good Governance, the National Credit Act The Banks Act and JSE listings requirement.
